Three area teams start what they hope to be deep playoff runs this evening, when the PIAA soccer tournament gets underway. The Juniata boys, East Juniata girls and Tigers boys all play first round games today.

 

The Penguins scored four straight second period goals to take a one-goal lead but it was all Boston in the third. Bruins over visiting Pittsburgh, 6-4.

 

Penn State basketball opens up tonight. The men host Maryland Eastern Shore, while the Lady Lions open at Towson.

 

Three young local runners, competing for the Juniata Valley Striders, won individual titles at the recent USATF Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Championships in Philadelphia. Beni Ishler, Hoyt Rodenbaugh and Addie Parson were winners in their respective age groups. The Striders’ 9-10 year old boys also won the team championship.

 

Dallas took care of division-rival New York last night, closing out Week 9 in the NFL with a 37-18 win over the Giants.

 

Devin Booker scored a game-high 40 points in leading Phoenix past the 76er’s last night. Al Horford had 32 for Philly, which lost its first game of the year, falling to 5-1.

 

And Penn State is down a spot in the latest Division I women’s volleyball rankings, checking in at #8 this week. Pitt continues to receive a chunk of first place votes but hangs steady at #2 this week.
