The Flyers knocked off Washington, 3-1, to improve to 2-0 in the round robin portion of the Stanley Cup qualifiers. The Penguins, meanwhile, need a win this afternoon to stay alive in their Stanley Cup qualifier with the Montreal Canadiens.

 

Governor Tom Wolf said yesterday he believes there should be no high school sports until January. He also said that is a guidance recommendation, not a mandate.

 

Penn State All-American linebacker Micah Parsons will sit out the coming season, choosing instead to prepare for next year’s NFL draft. Penn State opens at home on September 5 against Northwestern. Preseason practices start today.

 

Raise the Jolly Roger. The Pirates snapped a seven-game losing streak, thanks to a two-run, pinch-hit single from Kevin Newman in the bottom of the ninth. Buccos win it, 6-5. The Phillies also won yesterday, a 5-4 victory over the New York Yankees.

The Sixers will be without two-time All-Star Ben Simmons for a period of time, although there is no timetable for his return. Simmons is out indefinitely with a left knee injury. Philadelphia has five seeding games left before the NBA playoffs start.

 

Port Royal Speedway gears up for some Saturday racing. 410’s, Late Models and 305’s on the card. NASCAR’s Cup Series will also race on Saturday, a 400-miler at Michigan International Speedway.

 

And  Jason Day and Brendon Todd shot first round 65’s to take one strokes leads into round two of the PGA Championship. Tiger Woods is three shots back.
