Mifflin County alum and current North Carolina State redshirt freshman Trent Hidlay earned bronze at the Junior World Championships. Hidlay beat his Latvian opponent, 9-0, in the third place match.

The Phillies hammered the Chicago Cubs, 11-1. If the Fightin’s hope to continue their push for the postseason, they’ll most likely have to do it without starting pitcher Jake Arrieta. Arrieta was placed on the IL yesterday with bone spurs in his pitching elbow and is likely to be undergo surgery soon, which would end his season.

The Pirates’ modest two-game win is over. The L.A. Angels with yesterday’s 7-4 victory.

The Eagles are in Jacksonville tonight for game two of their four-game preseason. The Steelers host Kansas City on Saturday night.

Juniata College checks in at #2 in the Division III preseason women’s volleyball poll. The Eagles received two first place votes. Emory is number one. Calvin is number two.

And, in area minor league baseball action, Williamsport knocked off State College, 7-5, and Altoona blanked Harrisburg in 10, 3-0.
