Charlie Manuel is back coaching for the Philadelphia Phillies.  The Fightin’s fired hitting coach John Mallee yesterday, bringing Manuel from the front office to fill the position for the rest of the season.

On the field, the Phillies won last night, doubling up the visiting Chicago Cubs, 4-2. The Pirates also won. That’s two straight after losing eight in a row. Bucs 10, Los Angeles Angels 7.

State College, meanwhile, scored five in the first en route to an 8-6 win over Williamsport. Also last night, Harrisburg outslugged Altoona, 13-10.

And the Penn State women’s volleyball team received one first place vote but still checks in at #8 in the AVCA preseason poll. Top-ranked Stanford received 62 of the 64 first place votes. Nebraska received the remaining vote, coming in at number two. The Cardinal have won two of the last three national championships, the Huskers two of the last four. The Lions went back-to-back in 2013 and ’14. Pittsburgh, by the way, checks in at #12.
