Legislation authored by Representative Rich Irvin (R-Huntingdon/Centre/Mifflin) that honors a Huntingdon County hero was approved this week by the state House of Representatives.  The bill designates a portion of Route 747 over the Juniata River in Mount Union Borough as the Captain Joseph S. Giacobello Memorial Bridge. Giacobello, a lifelong resident of Mount Union, was drafted into the United States Army on June 17th, 1942, and went overseas with the 35th Infantry Division, (Co. F, 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry Reg.), arriving in Normandy July 5th, 1944.  He heroically led his company in an attack on the French village of Hellimer, where he and two others stopped a machine gun and knocked out a German Panther tank.  For his service, Giacobello was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Badge, while fighting in the European Theater.  House Bill 1298 now goes to the state Senate for consideration.
