When it comes to music, Pennsylvania has pumped out some high-level female singers/musicians! PA may not be discussed in the same breaths as NY, LA, Nashville or Seattle but maybe it should be.

Let’s take at look at some of the stars the Keystone state gave birth to.

Alecia Beth Moore Hart , known professionally as P!nk was born in Doylestown (Bucks County), about 25 miles from center-city Philadelphia. P!nk has released eight studio albums, as well as one live album. She has sold 60 million albums and, 75 million singles. The superstar singer/songwriter has won three Grammy Awards, seven MTV Video Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards and five World Music Awards.

Elizabeth Mae “Lzzy” Hale is a Grammy winner, best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of hard rock band Halestorm, which she co-founded with her brother Arejay Hale. The band, then just Lzzy and AreJay, used to be a frequent guest on Merf Radio’s now-defunct Homegrown Show. They’re from Red Lion, which is just outside York.

Lisa Nicole Lopes, better known by her stage name Left Eye, was an American rapper and singer and a huge part of the R&B girl group TLC. Born in Philadelphia, Left Eye, sadly, was killed in a car crash while on vacation and shooting a documentary about charity work in Honduras.

Joan Larkin was in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. At age 16, , now Joan Jett, she became a founding member of the Runaways. She later formed the iconic band Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, EVENTUALLY earning herself induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Christina Aguilera was born in Staten Island, but, following her parents’ divorce when she was six years old, Aguilera, her younger sister Rachel, and her mother moved into her grandmother’s home in Rochester, a suburb in the Pittsburgh area. That’s young enough to call her our own! She started on the Mickey Mouse Club before becoming a certified pop[ star!

Gabby Barrett is one of eight children born to Blaise and Pam Barrett, growing up in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She finished third on the 16th season of American Idol. Her debut single “I Hope” became a top three hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA.

Christina Perri was born in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. She’s had three top 10 hits on the Billboard Adult charts. She didn’t have a record deal when her song “Jar of Hearts” was features on “So You Think You Can Dance” but it’s success got her a conrtact with Atlantic Records!

Grace Martine Tandon, better known by her stage name Daya, is a singer and songwriter from Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Daya was only 16 years old when her song “Hide Away”, peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. She has another Top 40 hit on her resume in “Sit Still, Look Pretty.” She sang on a hit with The Chainsmokers, “Don’t Let Me Down,” which reached #3 on the charts, staying in the Top 10 for 23 weeks.

Vanessa Carlton was born in Milford, Pennsylvania, the first of three children. She’s got six studio albums under her belt, including her debut, “Be Not Nobody,” which reached the top five. Her single from that LP, “A Thousand Miles,” went to #1 in the U.S. and Australia and was Top 10 around the world.

We’ve arguably saved the best for last. Taylor Swift was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Sure, she moved to Nashville at 14 to become a country artist but her formative years were right here in the Keystone State. She’s ours, Nashville! You already know her story, so we’ll just leave it here.
