The Mifflin County Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled its latest class of soon-to-be inductees.
Lewistown Area High School and University of Duke alum Krista Gingrich (Duke photo, below) leads a class of six. A two-time PIAA champion, Gingrich went on to become a co-capaiin for the Blue Devils her senior year. Krista’s dad, Richard, who excelled in basketball and football at Chief Logan, and later in football at Penn State, will join her in this HoF class.
Also earning the honor are Chief Logan and Temple basketball standout Wendee Booher, Chief Logan’s Joe Heller was the area’s first two-time state wrestling champion who later wrestling at the University of Virginia, and long-time high school track and cross country coach Ron Sprecher.
And the final new member will be Harold “Junior” Powell. He was a member of the great Lewistown football teams from the late 19-50’s and played college football at Penn State. In an old Sports Illustrated article, then-PSU head coach Rip Engle said of Powell:
The hall of fame induction ceremonies will be held September 25th at Birch Hill. The public is invited. Tickets are available through www.mcsportshof.com.
