The Phillies have taken a two-game lead in the National League East, winning their eighth-straight yesterday, completing a three-game sweep of New York with a 3-0 shutout of the Mets. The Fightin’s are off today before starting a huge home series against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Pirates, meanwhile, continue to flounder, losing their fifth straight. Cincinnati posted a 3-2 victory over the Bucs yesterday.

The United States won the medal count at the Tokyo Games, bringing home 113 total medals, including 39 gold, which was also the most of any country. China was second with 88 total, 38 of them gold.

Tied at seven after nine, Altoona ended up beating Akron in 10, 9-8, while Williamsport took care of State College, 12-7, and Erie bested Harrisburg, 9-4.

Kyle Larson won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen. At Port Royal Speedway, Devon Borden won 410’s, Kyle Lee took Late Models and Garrett Bard won 305’s.

And Abraham Ancer won the PGA’s World Golf Classic on the second hole of a three-man playoff.
