The PIAA baseball and softball championships get underway today. District VI champ Mifflin County will take on 22-2 Canon-McMillan in the 6A softball tournament. The Huskies are 11-8. In 2A, the 18-3 Mount Union girls take on Williams Valley, who is 19-4.

In 2A baseball, Mount Union plays Shenango and Southern Huntingdon takes on Sierra Catholic. In single-A, Greenwood battles MMI Prep and Juniata Valley goes up against Northern Bedford.

Former Mifflin County pitcher Peyton Reesman threw one and two-thirds, allowing two earned, but Seton Hill still beat Southern New Hampshire, 4-3, in the Griffins’ first game of the Division II college baseball tournament. Seton Hill moves into the winner’s bracket and tomorrow takes on Angelo State.

The Phillies doubled up Washington, 12-6, yesterday, while the Pirates lost to Miami, 3-1. In the minors, State College scored a whopping nine first inning runs en route to a 12-2 win over Mahoning Valley. Portland shut out Harrisburg, 3-0, and Altoona hammered Richmond, 11-2.

Sixers’ star Joel Embiid returned from injury and scored 39 points but it was Atlanta that took Game One of that best-of-seven NBA Eastern Conference semifinal, 128-124. Game Two is tomorrow Night, also in Philadelphia.

Jared Esh took 410’s at Port Royal Speedway over the weekend. Jason Covert won Super Late Models, while Devin Hart and Shawn Shoemaker each won a Limited Late Models feature. Kyle Larson won NASCAR’s road race at Sonoma.

And Patrick Cantlay defeated Collin Morikawa in a one-hole playoff for the PGA’s Memorial Tournament championship.
