Mifflin County has three state track and field qualifiers. Taylor Ciccolini is the district champ in the javelin with Brayden Harris moving on as 3,200 champion. Kylee Cubbison advances as the runner-up in the girl’s 3,200. East Juniata’s Rowan Smith, meanwhile, is into the finals of District IV’s 110m hurdles, which run tomorrow morning at 11:10.
Mifflin County’s softball team is into the District VI 6A finals after beating Altoona yesterday, 13-3. The Huskies play State College in the title game on Wednesday. Over in District IV, East Juniata’s baseball team plays Montgomery tomorrow with the winner playing top-seeded Sayre in the AA quarters on Monday. Today, Mount Union’s boys take on Bishop Guilfoyle in the D6 AA quarters.
Jeff Carter scored twice, helping the Penguins to a Game Three win in their first round best-of-seven series with the New York Islanders. The 5-4 victory puts the Pens up two games to one.
Altoona has won nine of 11, beating Harrisburg last night, 5-2. The two teams play each other through Sunday. In the big leagues, it was the Pirates over Atlanta in 10, 6-4. Miami shut out the Phillies, 6-0.
And Washington blew out Indiana last night, 142-115, to earn a first round playoff series against the top-seeded Sixers. Game One of the best-of-seven is Sunday at one o’clock.
