Now through April 30th, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF) is celebrating Rothrock Week, in honor of a Mifflin County native. The week honors Joseph T. Rothrock, who was born in McVeytown in 1839. Rothrock was a botanist and surgeon who traveled the state by horse and wagon for two decades to help the public understand the importance of Pennsylvania’s forests. His lectures helped lead to the creation of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association, which was the first forestry organization in the country. Governor Robert E. Pattison named Rothrock the first Forestry Commissioner. He continued as a member of the Forestry Commission on and off until his death in 1922.
