The second phase of a new COVID-19 relief grant is now open for eligible hospitality industry businesses in Mifflin County.  County Commissioners are urging more businesses to apply for funds that are only available until funds are exhausted, or June 15th this year.  Grants range from $5,000 to $50,000 to help alleviate 2020 revenue losses and pay for eligible operating expenses due to the pandemic.  If Mifflin County businesses need assistance with the completion of the application, they should contact Planning and Development Director Mark Colussy at 717-242-0887.  For more information, contact SEDA-COG.

On April 14, 2021, the Mifflin County Regional Police Department was notified of a new phone scam that is active in the area.  The scam involves calls that “spoof” or mimic a phone number associated with Pennsylvania’s Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts’ (AOPC).  Those being targeted are told of unpaid court fines and outstanding fees. Should the fees not be paid, the caller threatens to place the individual on the Pennsylvania sex offender registry, or threatens other penalties.  Should you receive a phone call from an individual claiming to be involved with the AOPC, or a local police department, requesting money or payment of fines, fees or court costs, do not provide any sensitive personal information or any form of payment.  Instead, report the incident to local police.

To align the local earned income tax filing deadline with the extended PA and IRS filing deadlines, the area’s local earned income tax collector, Keystone Collections Group, will not impose additional late filing penalties and interest to local taxpayers who file by May 17th.  The extension does not apply to any other tax payments.  Employer filing deadlines for reporting payroll withholdings are not changed, and quarterly estimates for 1st quarter 2021 have not been extended.  Taxpayers with questions regarding the filing deadline should contact Keystone’s Taxpayer Services Department at (888) 328-0565.
