Authorities responded to reports of a shooting in Mifflin County early yesterday.  Mifflin County Communications received a 911 call regarding a shooting on the 400 block of Woodland Avenue in Derry Township shortly after 2:00 am Wednesday.  According to Mifflin County Regional Police, the shooting was the result of a verbal altercation.  A 32-year-old male from Lindy Lane fired one round from a 9mm carbine rifle at a 31-year-old male resident of Woodland Avenue, striking him in the upper leg.  The shooter was taken into custody.  The victim was flown by helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.  Regional officers were assisted at the scene by the Lewistown and Granville Township Police Departments.

Geisinger is alerting patients to recent reports of scammers trying to steal personal data by posing as COVID vaccine schedulers. The activity involves automated and live calls, and text messages reaching out to Geisinger patients under the guise of scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine. The scammers are asking patients for their name, date of birth and Social Security number in order to schedule a vaccine appointment.  Be aware that Geisinger will never ask for a Social Security number, and if someone asks for it, it is a scam. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up or not respond.  Never give out personal information, such as your Social Security number or medical record number, over the telephone.  For more information on ways to protect your personal information, visit geisinger.org/security.

Authorities in Mifflin County are investigating the discovery of methamphetamine at an area business.  Regional Police officers were dispatched to a Burnham business on February 27th regarding a suspicious substance found in the store.  A small plastic baggie containing a crystalline substance was turned over to police.  Further investigation revealed the substance to be methamphetamine.  Officers are working with store personnel to review video footage and identify the owner of the meth.
