East Juniata’s girls soccer team is just a win away from a berth in the PIAA Class A championship game. The Tigers beat Calvary Christian on Saturday, 1-0, to advance to tomorrow’s semifinal matchup with Camp Hill. That winner gets either Shady Side or Greensburg Central Catholic in Saturday’s title game.

Also in the state semifinals are a couple of area field hockey teams although only one can advance to the championship game. Greenwood and Newport will battle in a PIAA Class A semifinal tomorrow. The winner will play either Oley Valley or Wyoming Seminary for the title on Saturday.

It wasn’t pretty but a win’s a win. The Steelers had to rally from a 14-point deficit to beat Indianapolis as time expired, 20-17. The Eagles, meanwhile, were on their bye week this past weekend.

Penn State football is back up to #13 in the AP poll after Saturday’s 35-6 homecoming win over Rutgers. Penn State wrestling, meanwhile, is 2-0 after crushing Bucknell yesterday, 36-6. The Lions’ mens basketball team took care of Fairleigh Dickinson, 81-57. The Lady Lions beat Drexel, 84-70.

Two area teams remain alive in the District VI football playoffs. In Class 3A, Huntingdon will take on Forest Hills for the title while, in single-A, Juniata Valley will battle Bishop Guilfoyle. Both games are this Friday night at seven.

Matt Kenseth won yesterday’s running of the Can-Am 500. Kenseth missed moving on to NASCAR’s Championship 4. Competing for the title at Homestead next week are Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex, Jr. and Brad Kesolowski.

Mifflin County alum Hayden Hidlay went 2-0 at 157 pounds for North Carolina State over the weekend. The redshirt freshman won by major decision and a tech fall.

Another Mifflin County alum, Kezia Loht, had a goal and an assist as Messiah field hockey advanced to the national semifinals with yesterday’s 5-0 win over Trinity. Loht and the 21-0 Falcons, the defending champions, will play the 17-3 College of New Jersey this Friday for a berth in this year’s NCAA Division III title game.
