Big day today as the PIAA track & field championships get underway. The two-day affair at Shippensburg University will see several area athletes competing. From Mifflin County, Chayce Macknair qualified in the 1600, 3200 and 4×800 relay. Seth Phillips will run the 800 and the 4×800. Macknair and Phillips will be joined by Garren Wolfgang and Brayden Harris in the relay event. Skylar Cicollini, meanwhile, will compete in the javelin.

Juniata’s Garrett Baublitz will run the 1600, while Ellie Shepps runs the 300-meter hurdles. East Juniata’s John Moyer will also run the 300 hurdles.

From Greenwood, look for Mallory Kauffman in the shot put and discus, Hayley Engle in the high jump, Abigail Taylor in the triple jump and Paityn Wirth in the 300 hurdles.

Corey Dickerson’s two-run homer in the ninth made it close but the Pirates still lost in Cincinnati yesterday afternoon, 5-4. Today, the Bucs return home for a series with St. Louis. The Phillies, who were off yesterday, host Toronto.

West Virginia sophomore and Mifflin County alum Isaiah Kearns took the 8-1 loss to TCU in the Big 12 tournament. Kearns went five, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out five. West Virginia plays Texas Tech in an elimination game today.

Houston is within a game of advancing to the NBA Finals. The Rockets are up in their best of seven with Golden State, three games to two, after winning last night, 98-94.
