The Pirates helped their own cause, mot losing any ground in the National League wild card race with a 4-3 win in Colorado last night. The Phillies lead in the NL East, however, is down to just a half-game. Arizona shut out Philadelphia last night, 6-0.

A passed ball in the bottom of the ninth allowed a State College runner to score from third, giving the Spikes a 3-2 victory over West Virginia last night. Elsewhere, Hartford defeated Harrisburg, 5-2. Also, Trenton nipped Altoona, 2-1.

Keystone Little League, out of nearby Clinton County, takes on Maryland tonight, hoping to keep alive its chances of a return to the Little League World Series. The winner of tonight’s game plays New Jersey tomorrow. The winner of that one plays New York for a trip to South Williamsport. Keystone represented the Mid-Atlantic back in 2011.

Penn State enters the 2018 campaign ranked sixth in the women’s college volleyball preseason coaches poll. Stanford comes in at number one. Last year’s champ, Nebraska, checks in at number two. The Lions open their season against Eastern Kentucky on August 24th.
